Currently, the world's energy consumption, especially transportation, relies heavily on fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas. While as we keep extracting them, they will run out sooner or later. Renewable energy is with the benefits of less global warming, creating economic development, and inexhaustible energy, and it is drawing increasing attention in energy industry.

Synthetic biology-driven manufacturing of bioenergy is from the renewable biomass resources and will reduce the net emission of greenhouse CO₂. It is of great significance to the sustainable development of the economy and society.

Bioenergy

Bioenergy is a form of renewable energy that is derived from recently living organic materials known as biomass, accounting for 55% of renewable energy and over 6% of global energy supply. Bioenergy can be used to produce transportation fuels, heat, electricity, and products. Common bioenergy and the resources are shown in the figure below.

• Bioethanol

Bioethanol is a kind of liquid biofuel that is produced through acetone–butanol–ethanol fermentation of several different types of feedstock such as corn, soybeans, wheat straw, woodchips, and more recently microalgae. Bioethanol has the same uses as the fossil fuels used to generate other classes of energy such as heat, motor power and electricity.

• Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a kind of renewable and biodegradable fuel obtained from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease. It meets both the biomass-based diesel and overall advanced biofuel requirement of the Renewable Fuel Standard. Biodiesel can be used as transport fuel, or in commercial construction equipment, and space heating.

• Biosynthesized higher alcohols

Biosynthesis ways for the production of higher alcohols as a source of alternative fossil fuels have drawn increasing attention recently. For example, n-butanol and iso-butanol can be synthesized using genetically-engineered bacteria. Especially, longer chain hydrocarbons, such as C4-C5 higher alcohols, have been successfully synthesized through the use of non-synthetic E. coli and Corynebacterium based on their endogenous α-keto acid pathway. These alcohols have a higher energy density close to that of gasoline, exhibit lower hygroscopicity compared to ethanol, and are currently regarded as very promising potential substitutes for fossil fuels.
